Wilderness First Responder

Wilderness First Responder is a professional-level 80-hour course that is required for many wilderness outings leaders and guides, and good preparation for anyone who does serious wilderness activities. You will learn about  environmental and biological hazards, injuries, and medical problems – how to assess and treat them in wilderness or disaster situations – and how to evacuate patients from the wilderness.

The Wilderness First Responder course is an intensive and comprehensive program designed to prepare individuals to respond to medical emergencies and provide advanced medical care in remote, wilderness, and austere environments. Participants will gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to assess, treat, and manage a wide range of medical and trauma emergencies. This course emphasizes hands-on practice, realistic scenarios, and critical thinking to ensure readiness to address medical issues in remote settings.

Key Course Objectives:

Advanced Assessment and Triage: Master advanced patient assessment techniques and prioritize care based on severity of injuries and medical conditions, integrating primary, secondary, and ongoing assessments.Extended First Aid Techniques: Learn and practice advanced first aid skills such as wound irrigation and closure, advanced airway management, chest injury management, and advanced bandaging techniques.Trauma Management and Fracture Care: Acquire advanced skills in managing trauma, including splinting and immobilization techniques for various types of fractures, dislocations, and severe musculoskeletal injuries.Medical Emergencies: Develop expertise in managing a wide range of medical emergencies, including cardiac events, respiratory distress, neurological issues, allergic reactions, and metabolic conditions, with a focus on improvisation and resourcefulness.Environmental Emergencies: Understand and respond to environmental emergencies such as hypothermia, hyperthermia, altitude sickness, lightning strikes, and cold- and heat-related illnesses.Wilderness Rescue and Evacuation Strategies: Learn advanced techniques for organizing and executing wilderness rescues and evacuations, including high-angle and water rescues, as well as coordination with search and rescue teams.Wilderness Pharmacology: Gain knowledge of common medications, their usage, and administration in a wilderness setting, with a focus on proper dosages, indications, contraindications, and potential adverse effects.Communication and Leadership in Wilderness Care: Develop effective communication, leadership, and decision-making skills in dynamic and stressful wilderness situations, including team management and coordination with outside medical resources.Patient Care Documentation: Understand the importance of accurate and detailed patient care documentation, including creating medical records and providing handover reports to medical professionals.Integration of Realistic Scenarios and Simulations: Engage in advanced wilderness scenarios and simulations, integrating previously acquired knowledge and skills to enhance critical thinking, situational awareness, and problem-solving abilities.
